Advanced Ultrasonic Testing

Discontinuities in welds and components are examined using PAUT and TOFD, with digital data recorded for location and size assessment.

Method and application

PAUT (Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing) electronically steers the sound beam to different angles and focal points. TOFD (Time of Flight Diffraction) evaluates the travel time of sound diffracted by discontinuities. The techniques are applied individually or together according to material, thickness, geometry and access.

Scope of application

  • Planned scanning and digital recording of welded joints
  • Assessment of discontinuity location and size in suitable geometries
  • Examination of indications against the relevant acceptance criteria
  • Inspection records suitable for comparison with subsequent examinations
PAUT and TOFD are ultrasonic techniques, not radiographic methods. Scan coverage and detection limits depend on geometry, surface condition and the selected technique.

Reporting

Reports document the scan plan, calibration information, digital records, findings and scope limitations. Assessment criteria are defined before inspection.
