Eddy Current Testing (ET)

Surface and near-surface discontinuities in conductive materials are examined using the Eddy Current method, which is based on electromagnetic induction.

Method and application

Eddy currents generated by the probe are affected by discontinuities and changes in material properties. This electromagnetic response is compared with suitable references. The probe and technique are selected according to conductivity, magnetic properties, geometry and the discontinuity sought.

Scope of application

  • Surface and near-surface crack indications in conductive materials
  • Weld and component inspection using suitable probes and references
  • Inspection of heat exchanger and condenser tubes with suitable materials and probe systems
  • Inspection planning suited to material and coating conditions
  • Assessment of indications against reference data
Eddy Current does not scan the entire weld volume. Inspection through coatings depends on the selected technique and coating properties. ECA and ACFM require separate equipment and application assessment.

Reporting

Reports include the areas inspected, instrument and probe details, references, inspection conditions and indications. The application scope is defined at the quotation stage.
