ROV Underwater Inspection

Ship hulls, propeller and rudder systems, and accessible underwater structures are inspected using remotely operated robots.

Method and application

An ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) is an underwater vehicle controlled by an operator at the surface. Cameras and lighting capture damage, coating condition and signs of corrosion. The inspection plan is defined according to water conditions and access to the structure.

Scope of application

  • Visual inspection of the underwater hull, propeller and rudder areas
  • Sea chests and accessible underwater components
  • Imaging in suitable tanks and underwater structures
  • Integration of underwater UTM measurements using suitable equipment
Visibility, currents, surface condition and access limit the inspection. ROV inspection does not directly replace a dry-docking survey required by the classification society.

Reporting

Reports document the areas inspected, photographs and video recordings, findings and access limitations. The scope of in-water surveys for classification purposes is defined with the relevant society.

Remote Inspection Techniques (RIT)

Remote Inspection Techniques (RIT) allow structural elements to be examined without direct physical access by the surveyor. An ROV provides images of accessible underwater areas; inspection coverage depends on visibility, currents and access conditions. The scope and acceptance of use for class surveys are determined with the relevant classification society.
