Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement

Remaining wall thickness is measured in ship structures, tanks and pipelines to identify corrosion and material loss.

Method and application

Ultrasonic thickness measurement (UTM) is based on the round-trip travel time of sound through a material. The measurement plan is prepared according to structural characteristics, previous survey records and the technical specification. Following instrument and probe checks, results are recorded with their measurement locations.

  • Thickness measurement of hulls, decks, tanks and structural members
  • Wall thickness checks on pipelines and metal equipment
  • Recording of measurement points and valid results
  • Comparison of thickness loss against suitable historical data
Measurement through coatings depends on the instrument, technique, coating and surface conditions. Determining corrosion rate requires comparable historical measurements and their dates.

Reporting

Reports include measurement locations, thickness values, the method and access limitations. Work within a classification scope follows the relevant society's planning and reporting requirements.
