Composite Inspection

Composite hulls, panels and sandwich structures are examined for indications of delamination, disbonding and impact damage using advanced NDT techniques suited to the material.

Method and application

Ultrasonic testing and advanced NDT techniques such as PAUT are used on glass- and carbon-fibre-reinforced composites, as appropriate for the material. The inspection plan considers the laminate arrangement, core material, thickness and access conditions. The location and extent of indications are evaluated in ship and yacht hulls, structural panels and accessible repair areas.

Scope of application

  • Examination of indications of interlaminar separation (delamination) and impact damage
  • Indications of disbonding at skin-to-core interfaces and bonded joints
  • Evaluation of void and porosity indications in suitable laminates
  • Inspection of accessible repair areas and mapping of indications
The inspection technique and probe selection are verified with regard to the composite structure’s acoustic properties and suitable references.

Reporting

The report includes the inspected areas, method used, indication locations, dimensions that can be evaluated and inspection limitations. Results are assessed against the acceptance criteria established for the project.
