Conventional Non-Destructive Testing

Materials and welds are examined using visual, magnetic particle, liquid penetrant and ultrasonic methods without impairing their intended use.

Ultrasonic testing of a weld

Method and application

VT examines accessible surfaces, while MT examines surface and near-surface indications in ferromagnetic materials. PT assesses surface-breaking discontinuities on clean, non-porous surfaces; UT assesses discontinuities within materials. The method is selected according to the material and inspection purpose.

Scope of application

  • Visual testing (VT)
  • Magnetic particle testing (MT)
  • Liquid penetrant testing (PT)
  • Ultrasonic weld and material testing (UT)
  • Vacuum box leak testing on suitable surfaces and welds
Each method is sensitive to different types of discontinuity. Methods are combined where necessary; a single inspection does not rule out every possible defect.
