Ultrasonic Weld Testing

Discontinuities within welds and materials are examined ultrasonically, with findings assessed against the relevant acceptance criteria.

Method and application

Reflections within the material of high-frequency sound waves transmitted by the probe are evaluated. The probe and scan plan are selected according to material, geometry, weld type and access. The instrument and system are checked against suitable references before inspection.

Scope of application

  • Examination of internal discontinuities in welds and metal components
  • Planned scanning with angle-beam or straight-beam probes
  • Recording indication locations and signal characteristics
  • Assessment against the relevant acceptance criteria
Detection limits and scan coverage depend on inspection conditions. Full coverage in a single pass or a fixed minimum detectable defect size cannot be guaranteed for every weld.

Reporting

Reports document the areas inspected, technique, references, indications and scope limitations.
